The department of microbiology, GSL Medical College was started by Prof. Suguna Hemachander along with the inception of this institution in the year 2002.
Undergraduate training:
The department is engaged in undergraduate teaching which includes lectures on all aspects of
medical microbiology as per the syllabus formulated by Dr NTR University of health sciences.
The practical training includes demonstration of various staining methods and various spotters
with explanation and discussion accordingly. Practical hall contain stainless steel tables and
stools, 108 students capacity, with racks facilitated with continuous water and electrical supply.
In the practical hall every student is provided with one monocular microscope. Central gas line
is also part of it. Applied aspects in the field of medical microbiology are also dealt with
the aim of imparting best clinical knowledge to the students. The department conducts seminars
regularly in order to improve the depth in selected topics. Students are encouraged to participate
in group discussions so that they improve their expressive skills. Second MBBS students with
the help of faculty submitted proposals to the ICMR – STS and out of those proposals some of
them were selected and complete project report submitted to the ICMR, New Delhi. Out of them
some second MBBS students received certificates from the ICMR, New Delhi.
The department is headed by Prof. K.S.N. Murthy, a distinguished academician and well known
teacher and who is presently chair person of the IAEC, convener of the GSL medical college AMC
unit under PVPI and he was nominated as the subject expert by Dr. NTR UHS Vijayawada. The faculty
of the department includes a number of experienced medical teachers who are well versed with
the UG and PG teaching. Most of the teaching staff members are life members of Indian Pharmacological
Society (IPS). Many faculty members are active participants in the activities of Medical education
Cell of the Institute. The faculty works in close association with the clinical departments in
organizing scientific and research activities. At present the department has fifteen faculty
members (3 Professors, 2 Associate professors, 3 Assistant professors, 7 Tutors). library provides
all the latest books, journals and internet facility to update the knowledge. The department
conducts CME programmes as formulated by Dr.NTR UHS, Vijayawada, so that students get exposed
to various acclaimed speakers delivering lectures on various current advanced topics in the field
of medical microbiology. The department is eligible to undertake PhD training progrmme from 2014.
