Brief History

The Department of Pharmacology GSL Medical College was established in the year 2003 under the stewardship of Dr. D.V. K. Mohan Rao, Professor and Head of the Department. Following him Dr. R. Muralikrishna took over the charge as Head of the Department successfully till 30th of November, 2008. Since then the Department is working actively under the headship of Dr. K.S.N. Murthy in achieving results par excellence in academics and research. The primary goals are to provide future physicians a strong foundation in pharmacological knowledge and critically evaluate the merits of new and old drugs in the future. Medical pharmacology provides a novel integrative review of broad areas of biomedical science in the context of clinical therapeutics. For the first seven years since its inception, the dept. provided only undergraduate training. In the year 2011, the Department was recognized by MCI and was permitted to carry out postgraduate course (MD) in Pharmacology. Recently our Department has started the Adverse drug monitoring centre unit and is working towards making it a peripheral centre to be included under the National Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PVPI). The Department is well established with high standards and well equipped laboratories and sophisticated library. The museum is well informative and enriched with system models, herbals specimens and pictorial representations. The Department also owns a Central Animal House with facilities for animal experimentation and Operation Theatre.

    The Department strives to train undergraduate and postgraduate students in various aspects of Pharmacology, so as to provide the future doctors a strong foundation in the knowledge of Pharmacology. The department henceforth hopes to impart valuable knowledge which will establish their expertise in Pharmacology in their future careers and help them in practicing rational prescription of drugs. The department also thrives to monitor the various adverse effects of drugs in accordance with the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PVPI).

The department is headed by Prof. K.S.N. Murthy, a distinguished academician and well known teacher and who is presently chair person of the IAEC, convener of the GSL medical college AMC unit under PVPI and he was nominated as the subject expert by Dr. NTR UHS Vijayawada. The faculty of the department includes a number of experienced medical teachers who are well versed with the UG and PG teaching. Most of the teaching staff members are life members of Indian Pharmacological Society (IPS). Many faculty members are active participants in the activities of Medical education Cell of the Institute. The faculty works in close association with the clinical departments in organizing scientific and research activities. At present the department has fifteen faculty members (3 Professors, 2 Associate professors, 3 Assistant professors, 7 Tutors).

Our experimental laboratory was equipped with specialized equipment like Elevated Plus maze, Metabolic cage, Convulsiometer, Skin and Rectal Thermometer, Antihistamine Chamber with manometer Flame photometer, Autoclave electric, Waring Blender M.S.E. Hot air oven size 14”x14”x14” Incubator Electric 14”x14”x14” , Electric Hot Plate , Deionizer-two of capacity 20 litres per hour and 6 litres per hour (mixed bed type) connected in series, Physiographs with Transducers and other relevant accessories, Vortex mixer, Rotarod Assembly, Electro-Convulsiometer, Cook’s Pole Climbing Apparatus , Digital pH meter, Tablet Disintegration Machine Glass tubing (length of 6 ft.) , Animal holder –Rat (spherical), Animal holder –Mice (spherical), Animal holder –Rat ( half spherical), Colorimeters, Electro convulsion meter, Analgesiometer.

Apart from the highest number of distinctions our department was also credited with the award of “Dudala Suryanarayana Memorial Prize” for standing first in Pharmacology UG university examination statewide. The Department was also credited with the best presentation overall in the Zonal CME held in 2011-2012. Dr. KSN Murthy has edited all the zonal CME’s conducted in the last 2 years as a subject expert (as nominated by Dr. NTRUHS).
