The broad goal of the teaching of Biochemistry to undergraduate students is to make them understand the scientific basis of the life processes at the molecular level and to orient them towards the application of the acquired knowledge to solve clinical problems.
Biochemistry department started in 2002 to train 150 MBBS students and to assist patient care by quality in lab investigations. Dr.Ammanna Pantulu Nukala (2002-2010), Dr.Indira Benerjea (2002-2009), and Dr.YN Rao (2004-2009 & 2010-2014) were the main pillars in the beginning days and have contributed to the development of the department in various capacities.
Department is now developed for annual intake of 200 undergraduate students from 2014-15 onwards. MD in biochemistry started in 2011. Department is recognized for annual intake of two MD seats and the first batch has successfully cleared the university examination in 2014. Department is involved in teaching activities to various courses like BDS, BPT, MPT, B.Sc. (Nursing), B.Sc. (MLT), and DMLT.
Department is equipped with spacious lab for undergraduates, three demonstration rooms, research lab and department library with more than 100 books. Biochemistry division of central laboratory caters the needs of thousands of patients with state of art equipment and qualified personnel. Research is part of regular curriculum and undergraduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to do research with high quality. Department has organized regular PG zonal CME programs.
Biochemistry department is unique in being adaptive, flexible and student friendly and yet maintains discipline. It holds the record of improving pass percentage consistently over the years with good number of distinctions and first classes.
